The Bus Stops between cities too…

So, we left Charlotte Thursday en route for Atlanta. It was a longer trip therefore we had to get out of Charlotte quite early. We spotted the following sign:

and immediately a bunch of IT Pros (geeks) thought yeah, lets get some McNuggets and loads of sweet tea. It was at a truck stop, so the first sign we saw was:

which made us laugh. Initially we were only there for some quick food, however the conversation quickly turned to Windows. Andy and I were in our GOTB shirts and we were accosted by one of the truck drivers who said “Before we get back on the bus we had to answer one question”:

Here were are with Jim who had some very interesting questions about Windows 7 (we sorted out his wireless office and he was “on the road again” in no time!). So, for those of you who see the bus coming down the road, just because we’re not at an event…we’re still willing to answer those questions!

Thanks Richmond

For those of you following us on tour, you’ll notice we had two back-to-back events in Washington DC in the lead up to the Memorial Day weekend. What did we do over the weekend you’re wondering? Well, one of our tour members Brad is from the Baltimore area so he graciously took us on a guided tour of where he grew up.  Here are some of the highlights we got to see that we’d like to share with you!

These guys mean business and they’re on their way to see you. Why are they on their way to see you? That’s right, they want you to know the latest and greatest when it comes to Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 2010. Their tour takes them through various cities (which you can register for) and they’ll end up in New Orleans where they hope you’ll also be joining them for Tech Ed North America 2010! They’ll also be joined by a bunch of other experts who will be telling various other stories about things like Microsoft Learning and MDOP (just to name a few). What should you watch out for?

Well they’ll be coming to your town wearing shirts like this:

…carrying back packs like this:

DSCF1154 (1024x768)

…they’ll be coming in on a big bus too, but that’s for you to visit and see for yourself :)

Ooooh, let us not forget they’ll also be giving away goodies like these:

So, what are you waiting for? Go register today and learn a thing or two about windows and have the chance to win other free stuff too!

Can’t Make Our Bus? “Create” Your Own

There seems to be some discussion around the bus tour and the cities we’re visiting…It’s impossible for us to come to each and every city (and I was disappointed when I missed the last European bus tour), but rather than sit in my office with a frown on, I found someone who made his own bus tour happen. This blog post comes courtesy of Daniel Sorlov, an MCT in Sweden, who, when he found out the last European Bus Tour wasn’t coming to Sweden, created his own bus tour.

We Did Our Own Bus

We did our own bus. This is our short story, the story about “The Blue Bus”. The bus arrived in Berlin after being on the road a few days, taking us all to TechEd Europe. But it wasn’t the Microsoft bus. It was a community driven bus, by MCT Europe! Engaged MCTs from Scandinavia who were disappointed not to be visited by the official Microsoft Learning Bus tour, but still wanted to be involved.

So how did it start? Let’s go back a few years to the first bus tour ever, it was in the US and visited some cities there – launching Microsoft Learning closer to the students and trainers everywhere in the community. We noted this also here in Europe, but still, no-one could ever ask for the bus to drive over the Atlantic Ocean. Time went by and about a year later I got a mail saying that they were going to take the bus to, and through, Europe! Fantastic! Now I could be a part of the bus and the community engagement around it.

Until I read the fine print. The bus would only cover some countries in “continental” Europe. Scandinavia - no bus, no seminars, no Windows 7 launch, etc… Utter disappointment. But then during a lunch with one of my colleagues we said “Forget that Microsoft have their bus and it isn’t coming here. Let’s make our own”. A couple of weeks later that idea had grown into something much larger: a real bus. Going through Scandinavia and meeting the Microsoft bus in Berlin at TechEd.

We started finding sponsors and speakers in the community and to our surprise many of the leading speakers and technology specialists volunteered and our bus was on the way. We even got Microsoft on-board supporting the bus and we got the same graphical profile as the official bus, and we got to blog on the official bus blog. Our bus was just like the Microsoft one but driven by community experts and community involvement (and Microsoft speakers also).

We ended up visiting Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmoe, Copenhagen and Berlin. Covering most of Scandinavia as we wished, and with many stories along the way: Crazy IT nerds driving a bus down the autobahn, driving in snow, setting up the event at the wrong location, missing deliveries, hotels overcharging, running out of gas and lots of other interesting stories.

So if the bus isn’t visiting your town? Don’t fear! Get help from the community and create your own event! It really doesn’t take more than a bit of determination. A good way is to get the local and national SQLPASS, INETA or GITCA user groups onboard. Good luck!

GotB Question(s) of the Day

1 bus, 10 people, 9 cities, Windows 7, Office 2010 and MDOP. What about other things like how many miles will the bus travel between Boston and Washington DC? How many birthdays will occur on the bus? What versions of Windows Mobile Phones will we all be carrying/using?

Over the next few weeks leading up to the departure of the bus, we’ll be having a trivia question as part of our Facebook fan page (rather than cluttering up the blog). Some questions will be able to be answered before the bus departs, others will be reliant on information throughout our trip. One thing is for sure though, you won’t want to miss out on these questions as there will probably be some “goodies” for the correct winners.

So, what are you waiting for? If you’re not a member of our Facebook fan page yet, go over there and join. Don’t forget to tell your friends, tell your co-workers and tell anyone else who you think might be interested in Windows 7, Office 2010 or MDOP, or just having a good laugh too :)

Two weeks on the bus…What would you take?

well-packed-suitcaseSo, from the video teaser on the main page you’ve established we’re on a two week bus tour.  Looking further in to it, makes me wonder about a few things…

Luckily we’re going to be doing this tour in May and June otherwise it could be cold.  Mind you, we’re going to be travelling from Canada to New Orleans.  In Montreal it averages between 47 (8 celcius) and 65 (18 celcius), New Orleans however at the same time of year averages between 70 (21 celcius) and 90 (32 celcius).  That for starters means a jacket for the cooler evenings and shorts for the hotter Louisiana weather.

Next there’s chargers.  Stephen Rose joked about all of the models of Windows Mobile phones on the bus…That’s no joke.  How many phone chargers do we really need to take without it being excessive?  Thinking about chargers even brings up a further topic…Power.  How many power strips are we going to need?  Phones, laptops, lights for when we’re burning the midnight oil on the bus answering all of your emails…we’re going to need our own little power factory :)

Then of course there’s snacks, food, etc (as well as expresso like Tjeerd said).  We’ll be stopping for food at restaurants a plenty along the way, but do you take snacks on board and if you do, do you chance spilling something in one of the demo laptops or getting potato chips everywhere and making the bus a mess (and having 9 others mad at you for two weeks)?

We surely can’t forget souveniers.  We’ll be in 9 cities and each one will definitely be unique in its own way and have something on offer we’ll want to exchange for swag or take home with us, so there needs to be room for that too…

Guess one thing is for sure…There will be plenty of knowledge aboard surrounding Windows 7, Office 2010 and MDOP and I’m glad we’ve got Melissa along for coordination, however, that’s all I’m sure of right now and no doubt I’ll be packing the day before I fly out to join the bus!  If you were on it, what would you pack or take along (aside of your laptop) :) ?
